On Friday 5 June, at 11:30 am Eastern Time (09:30 am in Tegucigalpa), Amnesty International will host a webinar with British journalist Nina Lakhani to discuss her new book Who Killed Berta Cáceres? Dams, Death Squads, and an Indigenous Defender’s Battle for the Planet.
The Honduran indigenous leader Berta Cáceres was killed on 3 March 2016, less than a year after winning the Goldman Prize, the world’s most prestigious environmental award, for leading a campaign to stop construction of an internationally funded hydroelectric dam on a river sacred to her Lenca people.
Author Nina Lakhani tracked Cáceres remarkable career, in which the defender doggedly pursued her work in the face of years of threats and while friends and colleagues in Honduras were exiled and killed defending basic rights. Lakhani herself endured intimidation and harassment as she investigated the murder. She was the only foreign journalist to attend the 2018 trial of Cáceres’ killers, where state security officials, employees of the dam company and hired hitmen were found guilty of murder. Many questions about who ordered and paid for the killing remain unanswered.
Nina Lakhani will discuss the case in a webinar with Erika Guevara-Rosas, Americas director at Amnesty International; Berta’s daughter, Bertha Zúñiga Cáceres, who has continued her mother’s work as general coordinator of the Civic Council of Popular and Indigenous Organizations of Honduras (COPINH); and Gustavo Castro, a Mexican human rights activist and close friend of Berta, who was the sole witness of her assassination and was wounded in the attack.
