The horrifying shooting in El Paso is the latest example of the urgent human rights crisis of gun violence in the United States. This is among one of three high profile mass shootings in this country this week
Responding to a mass shooting that occurred in a mall in El Paso, Amnesty International USA End Gun Violence campaign manager Ernest Coverson issued the following statement:
“The horrifying shooting in El Paso is the latest example of the urgent human rights crisis of gun violence in the United States. This is among one of three high profile mass shootings in this country this week. Our thoughts are with the victims and their families —but as we’ve seen time and time again, thoughts are not enough.
“If reports are true, this senseless attack cannot be separated from the escalating politics of hate and fear. This is simply unacceptable. Everyone has the human right to live in safety, whether they are going to the mall or walking down the street in their neighborhood.
“It is outrageous that this country sees regular mass shootings and yet there is still no meaningful reform to address this crisis. We need reforms at the federal, state and local levels to protect everyone’s safety, including background checks for the sale of every gun.”
